A Guide to Outdoor Furniture

One of the great things about building a home is the ability to add the features that can truly make a living experience comfortable and relaxing. Many homeowners opt to add features such as a verandah or deck or perhaps even both, to add extra entertaining space or simply enjoy the outdoors. Here are some of the key things to consider when selecting the perfect outdoor furniture for your new home.

Consider how you actually plan to use their outdoor space. You may want a full set of outdoor furniture including a couch, loveseat and chairs, but if you only really need an outdoor chair or two to enjoy a sunset, then it may be better use of money and space to only choose furniture that you need. Conversely, some homeowners require a significant amount of seating options for regular family gatherings.

COMFORT AND STYLE

A main reason of being outdoors is to relax and feel comfortable and that typically means adding comfort features like plush cushions, privacy screens and the ability to get in or out of the sun as necessary. When selecting furniture, don't be tempted by a particular style merely for its attractiveness. Instead, sit down and put your feet up, and really try to envision yourself relaxing for an hour or perhaps even an entire afternoon. If it feels uncomfortable in the store, it probably won't get much use on your deck either. The style selected is really up to you. Some people like splashy colours that really pop like orange, bright yellow or aqua. Others prefer to create a space with more neutral colours like beige, black, white or grey.

DURABLE AND EASY CARE

Any furniture that is used outside in some of the harsher climates such as near coastal areas, will last longer if made of durable materials. No one wants to drag their outdoor furniture back and forth between their verandah/deck and garage on a regular basis in order to prevent the inevitable breakdown of its fragile materials. Materials that do hold up well include aluminium, furniture made from Red Gum, Teak or Keruing timber, and outdoor fabrics. All of these materials are fairly easy to clean and maintain. Pieces made out of synthetic wicker also have easy care features, although they are best kept in covered outdoor areas in order to preserve their usability as much as possible.

Considering a few important features first before making a buying decision, will help you invest in outdoor furniture that is beautiful, functional and lasting.
