4 Helpful Tips When Moving House

Written by Swanbuild | 18, March, 2018

Moving into your new home is an exciting experience. Before the ink can dry on your mortgage paperwork you're probably already visualising how you will decorate. First, you must move out of your current home and thankfully, moving doesn't need to be an overwhelming experience. Below we have listed some tricks of the trade that will take the stress out of moving into your new home:

Colour Coordinate and Label Your Boxes

Grab yourself some coloured stickers or markers and allocate a specific colour for each room. As you’re packing each box with the contents, label it with the correct colour. By doing this in the beginning, you will save so much time on moving day (and will also save your sanity while unpacking).

Use Your Towels to Protect Fragile Items

Rather than spend money on bubble or paper wrap, it can be a cost-effective idea to use your towels and tea towels instead. The towels need to be packed anyway, so they might as well serve a duel purpose! Use these towels to protect your plates, vases or any other fragile items you may have. It's also a good idea to avoid the use of newspaper if possible as this will leave your belongings dirty and in need of washing when you unpack them (which will be the last thing you feel like doing after a big move)!

Get Cheap (or Free) Boxes Online

Don’t fall for the trap of buying brand new moving boxes that you only need to use once or twice. Check online marketplaces to see if anyone in your area is selling or giving away their old boxes – you might be surprised at what you find! Often this can be mutually beneficial for both parties – you need some moving boxes and they need to free up storage space!

Break Down Your Tasks

Have you heard the old saying, 'How do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time'? This applies to moving too. Start by breaking down your tasks so the process doesn't feel overwhelming. Set goals for yourself and start with your non-essentials first. For example, start by packing your storage area, then closet space you don't use as frequently. This will not only allow you to conquer packing, but it will leave you feeling accomplished.

Moving doesn't have to be an overwhelming or stressful task. Setting goals, starting early and being strategic will allow you to have everything done ahead of time. When moving day rolls around the only thing you must do is move the boxes from one house to another. Don't let stress overshadow the joy of this exciting time!
