When Swanbuild creates homes we try to do it in the most environmentally friendly way possible. That means designing with things like passive cooling in mind. What is passive cooling? It means building a house in such a way that keeps it cool in the summer and warm in the winter. Consequently, you don’t need to turn on your air conditioners and heaters as much, saving energy as well as money. It is smart building.
Here are a few ways in which Swanbuild designs and constructs with passive cooling:
Utilising shade: Because the sun is usually higher in the summer, we can take advantage of this and allow less sun in during the warmer months. This could be by: adding blinds, selecting the best orientation and placement of the windows, or working with the placement of external objects such as trees. Deciduous trees can shade from the direct sun during summer and when bare in winter will allow the sun through. Swanbuild loves to work with the surrounding environment to your advantage.
Insulation: The best quality insulation stops the heat from getting in and consequently keeps the house cool.
The materials used: We can use heat storing materials such as concrete to absorb heat. We can construct a light coloured roof to reflect the sunlight and direct heat away from the home. Heat can penetrate any windows, even if double glazed. We can use materials such as tinted windows to limit this.
Utilising fresh air and breezes: Placement of doors, windows and open skylights can work with breezes and air movement to keep the home cool.
House Orientation: The direction of your house will dictate where the morning and afternoon sun hits your house. Swanbuild can help you capitalise on to keep your house at the ideal temperature.
