How to Choose the Right Art for Your New Home

Building and moving into a new home is an exciting time! Although many features of your new dwelling space have already turned your house into a home, the right art and other decor is often the finishing touch.  Finding the perfect art, photos and other types of decor is easy if you follow these handy tips:

Bigger Really is Better

Many people are a little unsure of their ability to select the right artwork and therefore tend to select pieces that are too small.  When in doubt, choose pieces that are slightly bigger than what you might normally feel comfortable with.  The right sized piece of artwork will look perfect all on its own rather than a grouping of smaller sized pieces thrown together.

Practical and Beautiful

Not only is it ok, but it is actually desirable to fix any minor design flaws with a few strategic pieces.  For example, if a room has less than ideal natural lighting, adding mirrors and/or some beautiful sculptural lamps can add interesting features to the room while addressing some of the room's less than ideal aspects.

Scale Matters

If a particular room is on the small side, just a few strategically placed decorative items are enough to make an impact.  Avoid the impulse to load up on clutter just because the pieces are small.  Conversely, if you have a large wall space, it might be a good area to make a bold statement with a large piece of artwork or sculpture.

Make it Personal

Gone are the days when people decorated their homes to "impress the neighbours" or to strictly adhere to some decorating guideline.  You and your family will enjoy your new home all the more if you fill it with photos, vacation mementos, treasured heirlooms, and artwork you truly enjoy looking at.  Gallery walls are a great way to organize disparate photos and other pieces of artwork.  The key is to find one common thread throughout all the various pieces, usually by colour or photography theme.

Adding personal and meaningful ensembles here and there throughout your home will give you and your family members that special, cosy feeling that truly makes a home feel warm and inviting.
