Making Your Home Your Own: Interior Design and Decorating Tips

Your home is your mark on the world. It should excite you and help you relax at the same time. Whether you’re in the planning stages of building a brand-new home, or simply looking to renovate and refresh your existing space, we’ve put together the following tips to help truly make your house feel like home.

Choose the Right Colours for the Room

When choosing colours, it’s important to consider how you want to feel in a particular room. For example, you’ll probably want to feel relaxed and calm in the lounge room and when it comes to the kitchen most people prefer to feel fresh and inspired. Keep this in mind as you work through your colour selections and you’ll already be on your way to creating a space you will love to spend time in for years to come.

  • Warmer tones are good for living rooms and other gathering places.
  • Brighter colours work well in the kitchen.
  • Consider keeping the colours in your bedroom to a lighter tone.

Consider the Lighting Element

Lighting, both natural and artificial, has the ability to make or break a space so it should be one of your most important considerations. Think about the kind of lighting that has really caught your attention in the past, whether at a friend’s house, in a magazine or even at a hotel or restaurant! Once you know what you’re looking for, you will be amazed at all the available options. If you’re building from scratch, be sure to talk to your builder about the best way to incorporate natural lighting into key spaces – you’ll be thanking yourself for years to come!

  • Fireplaces can add a cosy and romantic element to any space.
  • Consider the ability to control the brightness of lights with recessed lights and dimmer switches.
  • Don't forget about natural lighting in the new space. Areas such as the bathroom and living areas benefit greatly from as much natural light as possible.

Selecting Furniture and Decor Elements

Over the years, you have probably collected certain pieces of furniture and décor that you just won’t want to part with! It’s these pieces that make up a home so don’t feel like you have to go hiding them in a cupboard following the renovation, just make sure to factor them in to your design process. Alternatively, if you’re just starting out and have the freedom to select brand new furniture to suit your design try to remember that furniture and décor is an investment. It’s important to ensure that you will continue to love each piece for many years to come despite any redecorating that make take place in future years.

  • Don’t forget to consider space and storage requirements in each room. If you’re going for a minimalist look, you might need to factor in additional storage in other rooms.
  • If possible, avoid specific or bold colours for furniture. Neutral colours will be much more transferrable as surrounding colours and design trends change over time. This will help avoid the need to repurchase furniture every time you redecorate.
  • Take your time to consider all options before rushing in to a purchase. Get input from friends and family to broaden your perspective and help ensure everything comes together exactly as planned.
